I was inspired by one interesting article in the Magazine Drive about „Our brains change as we age“. I tailored this topic for each level of English separate. Seniors enjoyed reading it and fun discussion opened.

OUR BRAINS CHANGE AS WE AGE                                                     

Other mammals grow up quickly. But humans need 20 years or more before our brains are fully developed. This is what happens as we age:

Age 0-5:
Our brains are growing! While we learn how to walk and talk, our brain cells learn too – how to communicate efficiently with other cells. This must bet he reason kids ask „Why“ so much!

Age 5-10: The areas of our brains that control language and movement are very active at this age. A good time to start learning foreign languages…

Age 10-20: Our frontal lobes start to develop. This part of the brain controls planning and organization. This is when we’re best at remembering things. Enjoy your studies!

Age 20-40: Our brains continue to develop. We get better at planning, making risky decisions and managing our emotions. By our thirties, our brains are stable.

Age 40-50: Our brains lose a little volume, they get smaller. People at this age may forget things more often.

Age 50-70: For some people, the brain processing speed slows down. This can mean more difficulty understanding complex information. Keep this in mind when your grandmother asks for help with her smart phone!

Age 70+: Most people are still sharp! But brain disease such as Alzheimer’s may start to show symptoms at about this age.

You won’t have to do anything extreme, doctors say. Getting regular physical exercise and spending time (even just 10 minutes a day!) with friends helps our bodies and our minds stay fit.
And yes, chatting with your friends about the latest gossip really does keep your brain active! In Sweden, they found that people who often spend time with friends and family are less likely to develop dementia.

It’s also important to keep your mind flexible by learning new things. Scientists have found that people who exercise their brains by thinking about complicated things like art, music or science don’t lose as much brain volume when they get older.
