Thanksgiving Holiday was on presented by Stuart Carapola’s eyes who comes from New York
In the classes we were talking about Thanksgiving Holiday. Stuart Carapola my cooperative partner from USA shared his inputs with us including Italian dishes on Thanksgiving because his ancestors came from Italy.
He wrote the text for my students which I covered with pictures. I think we all had fun.
Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States.
The quick history on Thanksgiving: the first one was held by Pilgrims who came to Massachusetts in the 1600s to escape religious persecution in England. It was held to celebrate a successful harvest that first time, but it didn’t become a regular, official US holiday until the 1860s when President Abraham Lincoln declared it a federal holiday during the American Civil War.
Almost everything in America closes on Thanksgiving so people can spend it with their families. It’s usually a holiday where the entire family gets together: parents, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins (boyfriends and girlfriends or close family friends are also welcome). Thanksgiving supper is the highlight, but mostly it’s a chance for families to spend time together, and there’s also been a tradition for a few decades of having American football games on TV on Thanksgiving as well.
As for food, the main course is usually a turkey, but many families have a ham instead (I made one for my folks a few years ago). We usually have a couple of courses before the turkey, and in my family, that usually includes some kind of pasta (usually stuffed shells or manicotti), a vegetable, mashed potatoes, shrimp, garlic bread, stuffed mushrooms or clams, and a fresh mozzarella. Then after turkey, we have coffee and pastries. We also have antipasto before supper, which is usually a tray of sliced provolone, Swiss cheese, pepperoni, sopresatta, and also chips or pretzels with dip.
That probably sounds like a lot. No wonder Americans have a reputation for being fat.
