The last English lesson in June is devoted national anthems of Ireland, Scotland and New Zealand. With music and fun I say „goodbye“ to my students in this school term.

NATIONAL ANTHEMS OF IRELAND, SCOTLAND AND NEW ZEALAND

The Soldier’s Song is the national anthem of Ireland. The words of the song are about Irish people and their fight1 for freedom2. Ireland’s Call is an unofficial3 anthem. People sing it at sporting events.

Scotland has no official anthem. It is part of the United Kingdom. But they have an unofficial anthem, Flower of Scotland. People sing it at football or rugby matches4. The words of the song are about the victory5 of the Scottish army in 1314 against English king Edward II.

New Zealand has two official national anthems: the anthem of the United Kingdom “God Save The Queen” and God Defend New Zealand, which is more popular. The anthem has Maori6 and English words.
