These are a couple of fun facts that may broaden your horizons. Read more for example about why we use „mayday“ or why women have buttons on the left or why zero scores in tennis are called „love“.

Fun Facts.
WHY do men’s clothes have buttons on the right and women’s clothes have buttons on the left?
BECAUSE when buttons were invented, they were very expensive and only rich people had clothes with buttons.
Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons through holes on the left.Rich women were dressed by maids, so dressmakers put the buttons on the maid’s right-hand side! And women’s buttons have stayed there since then.
WHY do ships and airplanes use ‘mayday’ as their call for help?
(This is an international SOS signal in radio communications).
BECAUSE it was necessary to find a word that would be easy to understand in an emergency. In 1923, a senior radio officer in London chose ‘mayday’, which comes from the French word m’aider. This means help me.In English, it sounds like ‘mayday’.(At that time there was lots of air traffic between the UK and Paris).
WHY are zero scores in tennis called ‘love’?
BECAUSE in France, where tennis first started, the zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg, which is ‘l’oeuf’ in French. So the French chose to use this word for zero. When tennis was played in the US, Americans pronounced the French word the wrong way like ‘love’.
WHY does the letter “X” at the end of a letter mean a kiss?
BECAUSE in the Middle Ages, many people couldn’t read or write. So people often signed documents with an X.To kiss the X meant a promise to fulfil the content in the document. After some time, the X came to mean a kiss.
