Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday in the USA.People celebrate it on the last Thursday in November.Some people think that the modern Thanksgiving Day comes from the year of 1621 – the harvest celebration of the first English settlers ^{1 known  as} Pilgrims.But the first true² thanksgiving comes from the year of 1623 – people give thanks for the rain that ends a drought³ in a special church service.

Today, it is a day for families and friends.They meet and have a special meal⁴, such  as turkey⁵, stuffing⁶, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy⁷ and vegetables.Thanksgiving Day is a time for giving thanks.Offices, shops and schools are closed.It is a very busy time period, so there are a lot of traffic jams.

Some people dislike⁸ Thanksgiving Day - each year since 1970, a group of Native Americans protests in Plymouth (Massachusetts) on that day.
