Pavla, my student from Intermediate Level, prepared a beautiful presentation about Canada, British Columbia. She wrote an excellent essay and brought photos onto her USB flash drive. Let’s take a peek at more detailed lesson’s content.
Pavla’s excellent essay is attached bellow. It’s hung on the board in the classroom. We also projected beautiful photos which some of them I’ve uploaded. My student’s essay depicts also her interesting experiences which you are not able to find in a regular guide book. The lesson was just awesome and different from other standard English lessons. Pavla got a flower as a reward for her work by her teacher.
I spent three weeks in British Columbia on Vancouver Island. It is one of ten province of Canada. I went there with my female friend and her husband. Her daughter lives there with her Canadian husband. They have a flat in Victoria and a house near the town Nanaimo. The first five days we spent in Victoria and the rest of our journey in Nanaimo. Victoria is a beautiful, green city. Their flat is placed downtown, so we could walk around the city. We visited a museum with exposition about the first people, Chinatown, harbour, parks, church, the Buchart gardens and the neighbourhood Oak bay. We continued going on a long hike along the rocky coast through the rainforest. We watched the killer whales on shipboard.
From Victoria we went by car to Nanaimo. In Canada life without a car is not possible. We took other trips from there. For example a two day hike in Strathcona park. We slept in the tent. The forests in Canada are dense and inaccesible, bad is there are many national parks where you can go. Somewhere else are places, where camping is possible. It is a place for several tents where a dry toilet and a big storage metal box for food are, because there can be bears. But we didn‘t see them. It was a difficult hike, because we went through it in rain.
Next day we visited Tofino and Ucluelet. We slept there one night in the hostel. There were amazing beaches and a wild rocky coast.
Next trip was to Vancouver. We flew there by hydroplane and stayed in the hostel for two nights. The first day we went by gondola to the top of Grouse Mountain. The second day we overlooked the city from the bus Hop on Hop off and visited Staney park.
Last day we went to Capilano park. There is the rainforest, suspension bridge 137m long and 70m high and footpath through treetops and a walkway along cliff. In the evening we returned to Nanaimo. We visited other parks with red cedars and Douglas tirs, Englishman waterfalls, two small islands near Nanaimo and beaches.
Our last hike was to Mount Benson. There were spectacular views of Nanaimo, Pacific ocean, mountains and islands. Next day we went to Victoria and flew back home in the evening. The way took seventeen hours! I still have a jet lag.
This trip was a big adventure for me. I saw a lot of interesting places, plants, animals, birds. We met in Vancouver on the street skunk. Around a house in Nanaimo deers graze and hares jump. I saw raccon, hummingbird, eagle, whiskey jack, woodpecker, whales, seals. I taste salmonberries, salalberries, huckleberries. We oftentimes stopped in small towns. Almost all houses are built from wood, with ground floor or two-floors, mostly surrounded by trees. They look like cottage areas. The towns don‘t have squares. There are shops, restaurants, bakeries in the main street. We saw many homeless people, mostly young and drug addicted. In Nanaimo they have a big camp near the city center. In Victoria they own big shopping trolleys and they built a tent for a night.
In Vancouver they slept on mattress in a street.
We ate in a restaurant or on a street or we bought some food in a supermarket. Canada does not have many traditional dishes. I had chowder, it is a soup with seafood.
People in Canada were very friendly. I understood simple sentences in English when they spoke slowly. I was able to do shopping, ordered food in a restaurant and read brochures.
It is all about my vacation in Canada.
