In Britain and especially² in Ireland, red squirrels die because of American grey squirrels.

Grey squirrels eat the same food as red squirrels, and they have illnesses³ which are dangerous for the red squirrels.

There are also a lot of pine martens in Ireland now.They are protected by the Wildlife Act.

And in those places where there are a lot of pine martens, grey squirrels disappear⁴.They cannot tolerate this predator⁵, because they feel scared when pine martens are near.

But red squirrels know pine martens for centuries⁶.They can live together without big problems.

„Pine martens help to stop grey squirrels.Red squirrels are coming back, and that’s great,” says zoologist⁷ Dr Colin Lawton.
